Unity of Emptiness and Insight: The Path to Awakening
Exploring the Shared Essence of Chan and Vajrayana Practices
To the Buddhas, the True Dharma, and the Noble Sangha, the Three Jewels,
I take refuge from now until enlightenment forever.
With the merits accumulated through generosity and other practices,
For the benefit of all sentient beings, I aspire to attain great awakening.
🌿Quotation:
“ When practicing a very basic method, if the person has an exceptionally high capacity, they will quickly understand the meaning of the practice, even its esoteric significance, and swiftly achieve the goal of that method.”
Main Text:
◎ Question: Master, what is the difference between realizing emptiness and attaining omniscience, and the great manifestation of seeing one’s true nature in the Chan tradition?
● Guru Shakya: There is no difference; thus, the goal is the same.
◎ Question: Is meditative practice (contemplation) present in both Hinayana and Vajrayana?
● Guru Shakya: Yes, but the methods of practice differ.
◎ Question: What are the differences?
● Guru Shakya: Vajrayana is the result vehicle. To put it simply, it does not start from the perspective of an ordinary being. Although it skillfully guides ordinary beings, the teaching is directly established from the Buddha’s wisdom and insight. Therefore, without faith, one will inevitably slander it.
When practicing a very basic method, if the person has an exceptionally high capacity, they will quickly understand the meaning of the practice, even its esoteric significance, and swiftly achieve the goal of that method.
The Buddha himself demonstrated this. He studied ninety-six heterodox paths, mastered each one, and was recognized by the teachers of those paths, who admitted their inferiority. For someone with such a capacity, they can freely speak of the Chan tradition.
Before Zen Master Yangshan went to Mount Wei, he received a secret diagram from Master Danyuan. After looking at it once, he burned it. Master Danyuan said it was hard-earned, passed down through six generations of patriarchs. Yangshan replied that he had understood its meaning with one glance and saw no need to keep it. Danyuan said, “You may not need it, but others might.” So, Yangshan redrew it with his brush, identical to the original, even before receiving the true transmission from Mount Wei.
The four words “mind in one state” are easy to write, but when spoken, they should not be false words.
