To the Buddhas, the True Dharma, and the Noble Sangha, the Three Jewels,
I take refuge from now until enlightenment forever.
With the merits accumulated through generosity and other practices,
For the benefit of all sentient beings, I aspire to attain great awakening.
🌿Quotation:
“The reason one can attain great wisdom is also due to merit. ”
Main Text:
If one regards Dharma practice as similar to undertaking an engineering project—believing that mastering the methodology alone is sufficient for attainment, while ignoring the causes of merit—then such a person will certainly be unwilling to listen to, contemplate, and practice wholesome teachings. Instead, they will only want to quickly obtain specific methods and pith instructions, then rush to “build” this project of Dharma cultivation.
The reason one can attain great wisdom is also due to merit. The giving of Dharma brings wisdom. True giving is not done for oneself. If one teaches the Dharma for the sake of future worldly merits, we know this is not a supramundane cause and will not produce supramundane results. Therefore, if one gives Dharma merely for future blessings and rewards, it is impossible to attain the fruit of supramundane wisdom.
Thus, if even wisdom arises from merit, what reason is there to avoid listening to, contemplating, and practicing wholesome teachings, to fail to maintain right mindfulness, and instead focus single-mindedly on seeking “attainment” through so-called intensive practice?
Some people are born with a little cleverness. They look down on straightforward, “dull” methods, disregard the accumulation of merit, and only seek something marvelous. This is completely inverting the root and the branches. Their foundation of merit is fundamentally flawed, and their negative karma is extremely heavy. In such a state, no matter how much they rely on that bit of cleverness, they cannot possibly succeed. If impatience and agitation take over, they will deviate from the path, attain only deviant accomplishments, and become puppets of demons.
